Research now shows…
1. “[M]utations influencing light and dark skin have been around for a long time, since before the origin of modern humans”
2. Genes for white skin seem to have originated in Africa (not Europe) tens of thousands years ago (at the least). Africans (not only Europeans) carry the genes for light skin. It is likely that we all descended from an ancestor with light skin, covered in hair (just like chimpanzees).
3. Dark skin seems to be an adaption to survive after we lost our hair and light skin seems to be an adaption to survive in low light parts of the world.
